Simultaneous interpreters work from soundproof interpretation booths. They translate at the same time as the speaker speaks. Participants listen to the translation directly using wireless headsets. The advantage of a booth is that the interpreter can focus on interpreting, undisturbed by any background noise. The benefit for listeners is that they hear only the interpreter. A booth can provide interpretation for any number of wireless headsets.
The interpreter must be able to see the speakers. In cases where the booth cannot be situated to ensure a direct view, a video link may enable the interpreters to see the speaker on a screen.
Where interpretation is provided via tourguide headsets or an infoport system, a booth is not used. The interpreter translates at the same time as the speaker speaks. Participants listen to the translation, using wireless headsets. This system is cheaper than a booth, but it is not suitable for all meetings. The interpreter sits in the same room as the listeners, so there is distracting background noise. Also, other participants may find it irritating to hear the interpreter speaking. This system can provide interpretation to only a limited number of listeners.
